Igor + André is a brand that explores different branches of art and creation in every direction. Founded in 2008 by Danny and David Roberts to share Danny’s art, the brothers and creative partners have since undertaken a diverse range of projects, such as a Forever 21 line, a Tiffany & Co. mural, and even a new novel that’s still in the works. I had the chance to ask Danny some questions about the brand, and came away with the sense that Igor + André holds much to explore.

Tell me a little about the origins of your brand.
The origin of Igor + André was more concept based than product. My brother and I wanted to do a book series together, and I wanted to design clothes, paint, and make music. So, Igor + André was founded around Fashion, Art, and Fairytales, and everything that surrounds that.

What’s it like working as a team of brothers? What makes you two a good team?
I love working with my brother. We have been best friends all our lives and do everything together. It is really a natural progression to be working together. One of the biggest advantages is we don’t need to spend much time explaining ourselves to each other because we know where the other is coming from and we trust and believe in each other.

You guys seems to work on a pretty wide variety of projects. How do you decide as a team what to work on, and can you tell me about a couple of your most memorable?
I would say the criteria for job selection is pretty easy. It has to be fun, something new or something that would be challenging, and lastly, that we would have the freedom to do what we want to do creatively.  My Tiffany & Company mural was my most memorable project because of the scale of the project and because I had my brother and sister helping me on it, which made it really special.

What can you tell me about your novel?
Due the fact that we are still working on finishing it, I don’t want to tell too much about it. I can say that it is adult fantasy fiction. I’ve been painting characters and scenes from our novel for the last ten years, so I’m excited to let people into our written world.

What led you to fashion illustration?
I’ve always loved drawing, but never planned on doing it for a living. In high school I started a clothing company, and ended up going to the Academy of Art University majoring in Fashion Design. It just so happened that the first few classes I took were Fashion Illustration classes. My teachers encouraged me to pursue Fashion Illustration, and I have been doing it ever sense.

How does your work with fashion affect your other art?
Fashion has an influence in pretty much all my work. Since the majority of my work is drawing people, I find that fashion tells me a lot about the people I’m painting, so I try to choose garments I feel represent the subject matter or give insight into who the person is.

Tell me a little about your artistic process. What materials do you use? What steps do you go through before, after, and during drawing and painting?
My process varies from piece to piece, and it evolves over time. Currently, I’ve been approaching art a bit like an athlete. I’ve been trying to do practice drawings everyday and work on things I struggle with. Every few weeks, I try to create a large polished piece. Then, I learn from the piece and begin practicing again. As far as materials go, right now I’ve been using pencil, charcoal, and coffee for my daily drawings and oil paint for my polished pieces.

What makes a good subject for a work of art? Does it vary from medium to medium?
For me, a subject has to move/inspire me. Since painting is a long process, it has to be something that the more I stare at it, the more it intrigues and inspires me to work on it.
