Jute: Where did you get your start in fashion?

Erika: I first got my start in 2009 while interning for a eco-friendly Los Angeles based clothing designer. I remember the designer calling me up one day and saying “Erika I have a photo shoot and I would like for you to come and style it for me.” At that time I had no idea what a stylist was so I showed up to the photo shoot not knowing what to expect, I starting pairing looks together for the model and long story short my very first photo shoot ended up in a nationally recognized magazine; and from that moment I had found my calling and knew that I was meant to be a fashion/wardrobe stylist!

Jute: I know you have worked for and interned with numerous designers.  Who was your favorite?

Erika: I could honestly say that each and every one of the designers/brands that I’ve had the pleasure of working with were all memorable. Each and every one of them has played a huge part in my overall success and for that I am forever grateful which is why I can’t just choose one! Each of them were/are equally my favorite!

Jute: Explain your approach to styling.

Erika: My approach to styling is to ALWAYS keep in mind the vision of the brand/designers that I style for. I feel that it is very important because at the end of the day you are representing the designer/brand and ensuring that their vision is brought to life. Many people don’t realize that when it comes to styling you’re not just in charge of the clothing, but also the creative direction of hair/makeup so that everything is tied in and makes sense visually. I always ensure that I send out mood/concept boards to the team before the shoot so that they are able to prepare. Its all about setting everyone up for complete success and through that is by preparation! This approach I’ve done for the past 5 years I believe that it works so I will definitely continue to use this approach!

Jute: Where do you draw inspiration in styling?

Erika: To tell you the truth I draw my inspiration from everyday people, art, quotes, just anything that is mentally and visually stimulating. I love being able to visually transform fashion into a true art form; that’s what fashion truly is. So many photo shoots that I have styled are conceptual: they tell a story they bring you in, they make you say WOW…and through that “Wow” I know that I have successfully done my job as a fashion stylist; I have inspired someone! That’s what it’s all about!

Jute: How do you stay current with the fashion industry? More so, how do you predict upcoming trends?

Erika: When it comes to staying current with the fashion industry, I definitely do a lot of research subscribing to numerous international magazines and fashion blogs. I LOVE fashionsnoops.com which is where I’m able to see the seasons upcoming fashion trends which is an amazing learning tool! I’ve also been able to predict each seasons trend by paying attention to the cycle of fashion and how it repeats as well as basing my predictions off of worldly events that are happening….! So just to give everyone a hint for the fall/winter ensure that your closet has a military inspired blazer/look within it because it is DEFINITELY a MUST HAVE!!!
