Leather is forever – and TFNY (The Face New York) is taking every perfectly imperfect New York quality and reflecting it in what may be the most covetable, sexy-yet-effortless leather jackets you’ve ever experienced.

I was lucky enough to chat with TFNY’s creative director, Gilles Blanchard. What I expected was creativity. What I got from the conversation was innovation, New York loyalty, progressiveness (they prefer not to use models!) and a cool-factor that’s impossible to deny.

To date, TFNY has killed it by selling through their website, at local pop-ups and select stores. Soon, they plan to have their own The Face New York stores – entire spaces dedicated to some of the most beautifully unique leather toppers.

Find out more about TFNY and the creative genius behind it – oh, and don’t be surprised when you see these pieces everywhere.

How do you find inspiration?

Inspiration is everywhere. It is never an issue for me to find it. At the corner of a street or while watching one of my favorite 1980’s movie.

However, experience did teach me that interaction with others remains precious. That is the strength of a team. To push forward and harder into creativity

You stick to leather. All day, every day. Why?

I have and always had this very unique attraction for leather. Something almost intimate about it… its touch, its smell. There is almost no limitation to creativity with leather.

Furthermore, leather is forever. There is a true intrinsic value in it. Something recognized by all. Something that truly no other material truly offers.

Your brand screams New York, in a good way. Do you get inspiration from different parts of the city?

Brooklyn remains the place where the brand took and still takes its inspiration from. It is in fact the starting point of the brand. Vintage cars and racer motorcycles. A sophisticated low-key attitude, always far from the “glossy”. Something real, edgy and raw.

Brooklyn again because our collection remains approachable, true to itself and far from the so

Where is the TFNY headed in the next few years?

We are selling our white label through our online platform right now and through pop-ups in key cities. We’ve recently launched our Black Label Collection too, that has been a part of a few selective stores!

The goal is to open our own store. There is nothing better than interacting directly with our customers.

Which model would you love to work with on a campaign?

I am actually trying to avoid models. I prioritize “true people” who I have a special connection with and who relate to the brand and I love to use new faces.

What is so special about black and leather? It’s sometimes misunderstood as boring (even though we know it certainly isn’t)

Black leather is a no brainer item. This is precisely why most customers favor it. It just works.

I understand that black leather is sometimes perceived as “boring”, but somehow, whoever wears black leather does get this special feeling of being suddenly “stronger”. Black leather talks for itself.
