Interview by Lynzi Judish

How would I describe MAX.TAN?  Oh, you know, just a blow your socks off so effortlessly chic collection ever? It’s like their lookbooks teach you how to look cool while you’re in the process of shopping.  The Thou Shalt Not collection is one of the best yet, so we had to catch up with the label and chat about the SS16 collection!

Tell me about your inspiration for your SS16 Collection “Thou Shalt Not”.

The Ten Commandments from the Bible inspired the SS16 collection. Reading from the old testament and comparing them to modern day Christianity; Being inherently flawed, perfection is impossible to attain; yet we do not cease our endeavour to achieve this. Spring/Summer 2016 explores the possible outcomes from getting out of the captivity of artificial rules and standards. When there is no conformity, there is a greater room for growth. It all comes down to the core of design ideology, building up from basic forms, light, line works, contrast and stripping over-finished garments.

What type of woman wears MAX.TAN?

Interestingly, my customers are not defined by their age. I have women ranging from 18 – 60 buying my clothes. A woman who is a minimalist, understands fashion and craves for a little more design or story behind their garments. Appreciation for design (fashion) shouldn’t be bounded by age, no?

The collection is exquisite, but the shapes can be a bit intimidating for someone like me who tends to stick to classic lines.  Do you have any suggestions on how to wear the pieces and accessorize with the garments?

The lookbook and campaign is styled to project the brand’s image and I do agree that it is quite intimidating for some, even my customers. There are basics as well as more avant grade pieces in the collection. If one were to take the pieces apart, you’ll find beautiful classic fit and flare dresses, your casual black tee, a flirty handkerchief skirt; pieces that are meant to complement your existing wardrobe basics.

If you could have any celebrity wear your brand, who would it be and why?

I love Tilda Swinton for being such a classic beauty yet at the same time, very forward looking. That certain effortless air of confidence is something that I identify with with my customers as well.

Can you tell us about what’s next for MAX.TAN?  Any insights on the FW 16 collection?

I’ve just set up my flagship store in Singapore and I hope to generate more awareness for it. Design work wise, I’m revisiting some of my past works from FW2010-11. I’m never a fan of embellishments. However for FW16-17, I’m challenging myself to use embellishments in a MAX.TAN way.
