Russian designer Medea Maris has an FW16 collection that straddles the line between delicate and powerful. Drawing inspiration from Bradbury, old Soviet postcards, and even Star Wars, she has created a mood that reflects the infinite unknown of space and far away galaxies. Medea, who has worked as a Topshop Russian VIP stylist since 2014 and debuted her first collection in 2015, was kind enough to answer some questions about unexplored space, her new designs, and how Princess Leia became a symbol of the modern woman.

What’s new for your FW16 collection?

I used a lot of new fabrics, forms, and structures. I’ve just recently finished design training courses and couldn’t wait to show all the ideas I have had to embody in to my new collection.

I hear that Princess Leia was a big inspiration for your designs. How did you balance that combination of strength and femininity?

I consider it a fundamental quality of modern women – to be powerful yet delicate and fragile in a feminine way. And Princess Leia is an epitome of that combination. Us, girls, are strong and independent but we love dresses and all that girlie stuff.

Your pieces feel very retro futuristic. What can you tell me about that?

I was inspired by Soviet cards about space. When I first saw them I immediately fell in love with the way it was portrayed.  In fact, these post cards became the main illustration to the collection. For example, my shirt with a comet on a sleeve, it seems like I have come up with this specific design years ago when I first watched the Soviet futuristic animated films.

How did you offset traditional symbols of space, such as stars, with more abstract concepts of the unknown?

I’ve had two concepts in my mind: one about space, another – about new structural forms. I have tried to connect them both, play with this romanticized idea about universe and galaxies and here we are.

Why do you think the idea of undiscovered galaxies and unexplored space is so intriguing to so many people, and how did you translate those feelings into your designs?

Look how many films has been screened and books has been written about space. This subject, as well as love, will always concern and intrigue mankind because of its unknown and obscurity. Literature helped me in a lot of ways – Ray Bradbury and the Strugatsky brothers are the main visionaries of space. They present the outer space vaguely yet so beautifully, so you have a room for your own reflection and thoughts about the subject.

What do you wish to inspire in those who wear your pieces?

I want people to express themselves through my designs, to explore their creative element, to be open to art and to stay firm in what they love and believe. Listen to your heart and don’t be afraid of unknown and being different.
