Dear Freedom is all about creating fashionable pieces for women who are confident and take a great interest in individual style. Rasa and Kristin, the faces behind the brand, have been friends since childhood on, sharing mutual interest in fashion. Driven by the idea of compensating the lack of brands that created “fashion staples” they started their own business. Jute Fashion Magazine talked to them about the early beginnings, the latest collection and what sets them apart from other brands.

Who are the faces behind Dear Freedom?

We are Rasa and Kristin,
a design duo born out of
a childhood friendship.
Our love of fashion bound us together at an early stage. Spurred on by a desire
to create a brand that could embrace uniqueness in every female form,
Dear Freedom was born.

What is the brand philosophy?

We always wanted to create a brand, that at its very core, celebrated natural beauty and the female form. A “real” woman.

Our aesthetic targets discerning, intelligent women looking for functional trend driven pieces. Each garment is meticulously designed with a timeless and contemporary quality.

DF is a brand that endeavors to work, where possible, with natural ethically sourced fabrics.  We aim to reinforce our message by selecting local brand partners that share similar values. We love designing with integrity.

What is the story behind the brand? How did you guys get started?

The idea of Dear Freedom was born under the simple wish of doing something that would feel great for the heart and the soul. Kristina was in the way of searching herself in art and fashion illustration. Rasa was searching for something new and challenging with focus on fashion.

One evening we met for a girl’s dinner and started talking about our desires for future. One of our friends loudly expressed her admiration for a gift, that was handcrafted by Kristina – a fashion illustration drawing. At this moment the idea was born to transfer the paintings of Kristina on clothes by digital means.

After this a long process of brainstorming, mind mapping, strategic thinking and creative painting began.

What is the latest collection about? And what was your inspiration?

‘Dear Freedom’s” Spring-Summer18 collection is emotionally inspired by the Designer Kristina’s travels in South-East Asia. You will not find Asian aesthetic traces or beachwear pieces in the collection, but you will feel the freedom and positive emotions inspired by the sea, nature, cities and heart-warming smiles.

Naturally, the new collection is light and bright, with dominant blue colours and white and blue stripes. To emphasise the dominance of blue, SS18 collection colour palette is enriched with white, yellow and black combinations.

The new collection includes essential wardrobe pieces and could become a complete set for the season: dresses, blazers, blouses, trousers, a jumpsuit and a coat in positive, bright colours: white, sapphire blue, peppermint, aqua, striped blue, white and yellow.

Do you have a favorite piece in your collection?

Yes of course! Our favourite piece is the “Long striped coat”. It has a clean contemporary silhouette and the striped fabric gives it a twist. It’s versatile and functional – could be styled in many different ways, thus it fosters creativity and individuality. It is definitely a statement piece for freedom in ones wardrobe!

As the brand name already suggests; freedom is a key element to your brand. How can we find freedom again in your pieces?

We believe that every woman finds her freedom in her unique way. For someone it may be colours, for the others shapes or styling. It’s freedom to be yourself and to express your individuality.  We strongly believe, that how we dress is about individual choice, uniqueness and personal “freedom”.

What kind of woman do you see wearing your designs?

Dear Freedom woman is a versatile, independent, feminine, youthful, culturally aware and very social person.

She is striving for achievement and success in her career life and is a little bit fragile in her free time. Looking for self-actualization, searching for work and personal life balance. She loves her life. She is confident with her style and is looking for aspiring clothing. She values quality over quantity. She believes and supports sustainable fashion, healthy and ecological lifestyle, but she is not obsessed about it.

She is a woman that takes care of her inner mindset, has a free soul even though she is restricted by time.

Out there are uncountable brands and designers, what is it that sets you guys apart from them? How do you manage to stand out?

Our brand was a direct response to a gap in the market, which lacked well made “fashion staples”.

We are inspired by cultural references and architecture. Clean lines and strong block colours provide the DNA of our designs. We want to inspire women with an authentic message, one that transcends fashion and trend.

We follow our philosophy, our values and we love what we do – it all helps us to stand out! And of course the brand name “Dear Freedom” is also a nice stand out.
