So, first, tell us a little about yourself. Who are you and what are you doing?

I am Annalise Azadian, a 20 year old singer, soulwriter out of New York City. I play guitar and piano and I’m just on a journey towards one goal.

How would you describe yourself?

I’m definitely a tomboy and I like to express myself through fashion and set myself apart in my overall look along with the music.

When will it start and where can we see you on stage?

I recently just got back from my first SXSW in Texas. I dropped my EP and now I’m looking to be picked up for maybe an opening spot on a tour, but for now I’m doing venues in the TRI state area. I may do a 10 city tour in the next couple of months.

Now you’re a singer/ songwriter and you introduced yourself as a soulwriter; do you want to tell us about it?

I have been both a singer/songwriter my whole life, I like to call it a soulwriter because I truly write from the soul. I put my whole heart in my music, it’s all very real. I started playing guitar when I was 10 and always was into singing like in elementary school, but I would just make up my own words to whatever I was playing on guitar and ended up writing my first complete song after my grandmother passed when I was 11. From there I always used it as a tool to cope and picked up the piano to further my songwriting.

About the songwriting; a lot of musicians, for example, use their dating lives as inspiration. What is it that gives you the inspiration to write a new song?

I mean I guess dating life comes with everyone and relationship issues and heartbreak so that has definitely been an inspiration. I don’t control the words I write. I know it sounds weird but when I sit down to make music, I just let it flow! So, I guess my daily inspiration plays a part in it.

And when you are getting inspired and writing a song, what is going through your mind?

I usually start a song on piano or guitar and I just get in my own zone. I like to be alone in the songwriting process so I can feel more in touch with my emotions. lol. When I get stuck in a section then more runs through my mind cause I’m now literally thinking of words that can make the line perfect. I like to visually put a scenario to the words as if I’m playing a mini music video in my head.

Apart from the mini music video in your head, do you solely focus on the song or do you also think of how people will like it, how you will be performing etc.?

When I first started writing, I was only writing for myself – which, I think, are some of my most personal songs, now as years have gone on, people want different things, have different critiques and now it’s not just you; there’s a lot more people involved in a growing career. Now I have to think, “hmm… I wonder if this line will fly over the audiences’ head” or things like that, but I still just do me, I’m pretty stubborn. lol

So, would you say that only some songs are personal or is songwriting in a whole absolutely personal and private to you?

It is pretty personal and private to me,but it’s turned into my personal art that I can create. It’s kind of cool to be able to make nothing into something.

Has music always been what you wanted to do?

Yeah, I have a little Apple I made in first grade and it asks me what I wanted to be and it says a singer, but I also wanted to be a professional skateboarder at the time or basketball player. haha But music has always been my forefront. I graduated high school early at 16, turned down a scholarship where I could have played basketball and went to Berklee College of Music, one of the most prestigious music schools in the world.

And when did you ultimately decide that music was what you would be aiming at?

I really started to do shows when I was 13. At age 14 I had won twice at the Apollo Theatre which was pretty big for me and there I saw what people were seeing in me. I realized I could really do this! I went through the American Idol experience and then locked myself in the studio for years and just really developed myself as a person and artist. I dropped my EP “Untitled” and put out my music video “Passenger Mirror” finally after holding music for years and now I’m getting myself out there and a buzz in the industry.

It’s been going pretty well so far. So I have to ask: what are your goals for the next few years?

In the next few years my goal is to be huge and have a world tour; that’s when I will completely be satisfied: when I have headlined my own national tour. Before all of that (lol), I would of course like to be signed, but not signed to just anything, the correct deal that will get me the furthest I can go. I need to feel secure, I will never sell my soul. Also I would like to release my album within the next year.
