Accomplished actress, Social Media sensation and musical muse – this recent High School graduate is continuing her rise to the top. With hit shows already under her belt and huge projects underway, Jade Pettyjohn shares what we can anticipate next from her and who’s keeping her inspired.

How did you get your start in the entertainment industry?

I loved telling stories and creating characters. I wanted to do it on a larger scale rather than performances in my living room. I convinced my parents that I could over-come my shyness, which was an issue for my seven-year-old self.  I did all those things you do when you start. Headshots, agent, auditions, acting classes, etc. Anything you want in life starts with finding out how to do it, and then diving into it. That’s what I did. I was seven, so I had help of course. But it all started with me asking to do it and then figuring out how from there.

Tell us a little bit about your high school experience while juggling your career.

My high school experience was definitely not a normal one. I went to a regular high school in LA. However, six months out of the year I was on set. So, a great deal of my work was done on set in a tiny office with the rest of my cast. I would meet with my teacher over the weekend to do tests.  However, when I wasn’t working it was really nice to actually go to school. I could get a little slice of calm and normality in this otherwise fast paced world I work in. It’s all about balance.

How do you handle the stress and criticism that this industry can bring? What helps keep you so grounded?

I went into this field knowing that I would have to deal with a fair amount of stress, rejection and criticism. I came in braced for it and that helped. As simple as it is, having a strong support system and having a strong sense of self, of who you are and what you stand for eliminates the noise of the rest of it.  I absolutely love the work and that makes it where all the stress and criticism can be overcome. I love my job and I’m so fortunate to have beautiful people in my life that support me. When you truly love what you do the rest simply doesn’t matter.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Driving my friends with the windows rolled down, listening to our favorite bands with the volume turned all the way up. Something about singing very loud and off key with your favorite people can be so therapeutic.

Do you feel like you’re missing out on any experiences other young women your age are having due to your career?

I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything. In fact, I feel that the opportunity for new experiences are heightened in the field I’m in. I’m living my life exactly the way I want.  I get to travel the world and meet new and interesting people. I get to make art and go on adventures that I never would have experienced if I had a different life or career.

Tell us about what project you’re currently working on and what you’re doing to prepare for the role.

I just finished filming the pilot “Kansas City” With John Slattery, Rafe Spall and Allison Tolman. I can’t tell you how excited I am about this particular project. It’s very relevant to what’s happening politically in our country, and I think this show could start some conversations about how we operate as a nation. I play Clarissa, who has grown up in a very different world than I have. Most of the preparation process for me was getting a very deep understanding of her world which included extensive discussions with the writer and creator, Zev Borrow and director Rhys Thomas. I had such an amazing time discovering who this character really is. As I worked on my character I felt that it didn’t make sense for her to be blonde, so I requested to dye my hair. My character is also a jazz singer, so I pulled out my jazz albums and would listen to those while reading the script. Little things like that make the creation of a character fun when you are diving into it.

I understand music is a passion of yours. In what ways are you pursuing that?

Music is something I am passionate about. It’s a beautiful outlet for me to practice my own self-expression. I’ve been writing for quite a while now, and I may self-release some things in the near future.

What artists are currently inspiring you?

Because my character in Kansas City is a jazz singer, I have been on a jazz kick recently. Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin: the greats. They are so strong and empowering.

What advice can you give someone who wants to break into the entertainment industry?

Go into it knowing it is a lot of hard work and embrace that. Fall in love with the work of it and commit fully. Never do something you don’t feel passionate about.

What are your go-to beauty products?

 Mario Badescu facial spray with aloe and rose water is an absolute must have for me this summer. I’ve also been loving (living) for Rihanna’s makeup line. Fenty Beauty glitter drops on the cheek bones and under the brow paired with minimalistic makeup and feathered brows is a look I have obsessed with recently.

 

 How would you describe your style?

 I would say my style is bold and with no borders. I think style should be fluid. Some days I feel like repping my favorite band-t with a blazer and statement heels, and other days I feel confident wearing sweat pants with my hair tied up in a messy bun. I wear what makes me feel confident and I like to switch it up constantly.
