If I’d only have three words available to describe Lex Scott Davis I’d choose: authentic, caring, and empowered. She knows what she wants and she’s about to make things happen. Jute Magazine asked the actress about career, private life, and women in the industry, and Lex had the most honest and down-to-earth answers! Read for yourself and get as impressed by this gorgeous empowered boss babe as we did!

First of all, so great to have you for an interview with Jute! Thank you so much for your time, Lex! How are you doing? And what are you up to these days?

Thanks for having me! I’m doing well! I’m in the midst of planning a wedding so I couldn’t ask for more.

Can you tell us about your most recent project?

Recently I starred in Sony Pictures’ Superfly & Universal with Blumhouse Pictures’ The First Purge.

Where are you based right now and where are you from originally?

I am currently based in L.A. but I am born & raised in Baltimore, MD.

When did you know you wanted to become an actress?

I have always been in the performing arts since I was a toddler. But I had extreme stage fright at first. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I willingly participated in a play and even then I didn’t invite anyone to the show out of fear I’d suck. I found most of my comfort in dancing which allowed me to be on stage without saying a damn word. So, I went on to be a Dance Physical Therapy major in Philadelphia. Throughout those college years I had overcome those fears thankfully, and by my sophomore year I discovered my true calling was telling stories via film acting. Needless to say, I dropped out, worked for a year in a hair salon, and saved enough money to move to New York to pursue acting.

Was there another job you wanted to do apart from acting?

I’ll start by saying that I’ve been made fun of for the amount of job interests I’ve had throughout my life. There is just so much I learned to do out of pure boredom growing up as an only child, things that inevitably made me money while I was trying to navigate being an artist. If you had asked me this when I was 3 years old, I’d say I’d want to be a veterinarian. In middle school, I wanted to be a background dancer for Janet Jackson. In high school I wanted to be a film set photographer, but then applied to several colleges all for different majors. Dance was one of them, of course, but I definitely applied to a school for interior design. I was all over the place ha ha.

What would you say was the best advice someone has ever told you?

“Bless the people. Lace their shoes up because they tripping.” …my fiancé told me that. It’s funny, but it’s so real! Sometimes all a person needs are a sprinkle of love and positivity, and I carry that with me everywhere I go. So, if I spot a Queen and her crown is tilted, I’ll remind her what she is and fix it for her.

What’s a piece of advice you would give your younger self?

I’d tell my younger self to embrace her unique essence. There was so much about my personality I kept in a closet which has everything to do with why I was late to bloom as an actor. I wish I’d had the courage to get on a stage and speak in front of a crowd of people at an earlier age, just so I could have started developing the tools and resources that could have put me ahead the curve.

How do you prepare for a new role? What are your steps?

Although it seems obvious, I still find it important to state that the first step should always be, read the script. There is almost never a case where a film shoots in order. So it is important that all of the actors are aware of the entire story to know what happened the moment before and where the character is going. Once that is understood, I love asking questions about my character that may not be on the page. And if there are no answers for those questions, I make definitive choices that help shape what’s on a page and make them into a real person. The more I know about my character the easier it is to embody them.

When you’re not shooting a movie or preparing for one, what are you doing? What are you up to in your free time?

I love cooking and creating films. So I decided, “why not put the two together!?” In my spare time I’ve been creating cooking tutorial videos to eventually land on a YouTube channel of some sort ha ha. Either that or I am developing my own scripts, playing music on my DJ mixer, or watching HGTV. We can add these to my list of jobs from questions 5.

What is it like seeing yourself on screen? And have you ever thought you would come this far?

It’s weird! I’m not sure if it’ll ever stop being weird. I’ve always known I was going to be in performance art, but I love it while in the moment… I’m really awkward when it comes to actually watching the finished product. For example, I grew up dancing and never bought a dance recital video. I just trusted that it looked good because it felt good while doing it.

What are some future plans of yours? And what is the next goal?

The next goal is to write and the future plan is to direct.

How do you keep yourself motivated when things get rough?

Pray. Trust. Believe.

Was there a particularly hard time in your career that shaped you?

All of it is hard. It’s all shaping me into a better woman and a better artist. The truth is, acting is a career where it is normal to be judged, for and on everything. Literally. It’s very fascinating the more I experience it all. But I love what I do and I realize that nothing worthwhile comes easy, and if it’s easy it probably isn’t worth it.

Gradually, more and more women are becoming part of the behind-the-camera-scene and work as directors, writers etc. What do you think about it?

I think it is awesome that more women are in the positions of directors, writers, and producers! It gives me so much to look forward to as I learn writing and directing. It no longer seems like a far-fetched dream, it’s now something that can be obtained. I definitely consider myself to be a feminist but out of love for equality. My goal isn’t to “beat men at their own game”, rather it’s to just be on the same playing field.

What role does fashion play in your life and what’s your personal style?

My style is very eclectic. It’s a mixture of “tomboy-chic” while incorporating 70s inspo—big hair, high waist loose pants, etc. I rarely ever want to wear just a dress, I love layers, playing with bold colors, and overall, just being super creative with my appearance. Off the top of my head I like to think of Erykah Badu, Solange, Janelle Monae and Zoe Kravitz for style inspiration. They are a mix of actors and singers because I find that recording artists have a bit more freedom to be creative stylistically and that actors have more traditional fashion boundaries. So, for me, I want to incorporate that uniqueness I see in music while still remaining true to being an actor, with whatever I choose to wear.
