Nadia Affolter: young, driven, and as down-to-earth as it can get. The young actress who you probably know from Jack Ryan talked to Jute about her Senior at High School (can you believe that this one is still in school!?), her demanding role as refugee Sara, and her secret killer pie! But read for yourself:

Hi there! Thank you so much for your time, Nadia. How are you doing?

Hey!!! I’m doing great thank you, excited for this interview.

What are you up to these days? What is your current project?

Right now, I’m in the midst of my Senior Year of High School, so a lot to do. I’m in a program called the IB so it’s pretty challenging right now. I’m going on as many auditions as I can! I’ve been trying to keep up with putting up YouTube videos for music, but I need to be more active with that.

I read online that you were born in the USA but also lived in Asia, is that correct?

Yes, I grew up in a lot of different places, all around the world, including Africa. I loved it, taught me so much about the world, wouldn’t trade it for anything.

How does it come that you moved around so much and what would you call “home”?

My father works internationally, so I moved around every 2-3 years. New York is the longest I’ve stayed anywhere, I think it’s been 6 years now. I don’t know where I would call my home, everywhere I went I had something I loved so dearly, it would be hard for me to choose. For now, I would say NYC, I guess because I’ve lived here the longest. I love that NYC is so diverse.

When did you know you wanted to become an actress and how did your career start off?

I’m not sure when it exactly started. My official career started once I came to NYC and booked a small role on the Blacklist, but I guess my whole life I loved performance in the arts through acting and music. My sisters and I were always an enthusiastic bunch that loved the arts, we put on performances together. I signed up for any play or musical I had the time to do.

Would you mind telling us something about your role in Jack Ryan?

I loved it. I played the role of Sara, who is a loving older sister who goes through conflict back at home and is forced to flee. I really love my character because she is really brave, she kind of immediately steps into her responsibility, especially with her younger sister Rama. Having to play the role of a Syrian refugee reminded me of all that I have. I think we often don’t think of the basic things we are grateful for, playing Sara reminded me of how refugees have to leave their home, family, language, and school often having to go through immensely tragic ordeals. I think Sara taught me a lot in many different ways.

Where would you say did you learn acting? Did you go to drama school or did you teach yourself?

I never really took any acting classes; however, I did work with a coach before auditions. Her name is Mihaela Mihut, and she is amazing, love her. Although I had enjoyed acting in the past, she definitely brought acting into a new light for me from the few classes I went to.

What’s a milestone in your career that really makes you proud?

This project is actually one of the milestones that really made me proud. I mean it’s the biggest production I’ve done so far, I learned so much and grew really close to the cast and crew, so seeing the final project was a big accomplishment for me. One other achievement I’m really proud of was performing in Carnegie Hall in a duet. I also always loved singing and having a big orchestra behind me to support my singing was thrilling. Two experiences I definitely won’t forget.

When you’re not on set or preparing for a role: do you like watching other actors on screen? If so, what are you currently watching?

I love to watch other actors work, I feel like it’s so intimate to see their choices and their emotion. Everyone is bringing their authenticity and character to life and it never stops amazing me. Currently, I haven’t watched a lot since I’ve been super busy with school, but I want to watch ‘Beautiful Boy’ and ‘A Star is Born’. When I did have time, I watched Marvel’s Agents of Shield. I honestly really like movies with music in them.  Oooo, Ocean’s 8 was really good. I still need a list of recommendations lol.

What does a perfect Friday night look like to you?

Depends, on my mood. I like to go out with my friends a lot. However, I usually go back home and cook something scrumptious, watch some TV, play guitar, take a bath. Stuff I don’t usually have time for. Or I will do all those things but at my best friend’s house (I practically live there) … and then get ice cream….yum. I like to also have some family time, maybe watch a movie together.

What’s something only a few people know about you?

I can make a killer Lemon Merengue Pie!

What kind of character do you love playing and what was the most demanding you’ve ever had to prepare for?

I love to play any character that’s authentic. As long as my character has a message that is true to human nature, I would love to play them. That includes Comedy, Drama and so on and so forth. I think having to speak in Arabic for most of the show was very complex for me, although it taught me a lot about the language, it’s beautiful. Some of the scenes were very emotionally and physically draining. Being constantly ripped apart from my mother and sister was exhausting in the heat. Being in that moment and thinking of all the exhaustion and pain Sara had to go through was a lot.

What are you doing in your free time? What is it that helps you unwind?

I’m a really social person, I love being with my friends during my free time. I’m also a bath person, I love taking a long bath with bubbles and nice smelling soap, keeps me happy. I tend to have Jam sessions when I’m stressed or am emotionally pent up. After I’ve sung through a few songs on the guitar or piano I feel like a whole new person.

What’s the next big goal? What can we expect to see or hear from you?

I’m currently going on a bunch of auditions, nothing yet, but I’ll make sure to keep you posted. Some exciting scripts coming around.

Last question: if you could write and produce your own movie/ TV show what would it be about and who would be in it?

I would want to do a book to film adaptation, that’s as similar to the plot of the book as possible. Not sure who I would cast… some actors that come to mind are Timothee Chalamet, James McAvoy, Emma Stone, Brie Larson, Viola Davis… THERE ARE TOO MANY. Just wait for this production to come out, it will be the best 😉
