It was love at first sight. Center stage, spotlights and pirouettes. Actress Scottie Thompson was just five years old when ballet stole her heart. After spending a summer in New York for High School and dancing with The American Ballet Theater, there was no stopping this love affair. “I dreamt of pursuing a career in ballet and did dance professionally with the Richmond Ballet for a short time before deciding to pursue a different path – which ultimately lead me to acting,” Thompson said.

With dance and performance as her background at a young age, Thompson carried her talents and passion with her as she ventured to Harvard and began dabbling in the world of theater. “I didn’t really have any expectations of Harvard, aside from a chance to broaden my horizons and deepen my curiosity – thankfully, students there are curious for the sake of curiosity, not just doing homework to have it done,” she says.

After being cast as an alternate for a play, a spot opened up for Thompson, starting a new passion and path for her. Pursuing a degree in Performance Studies and Literature, she feels real life experience holds just as much weight in her work as she shared this, “I guess the thing is, with acting, life experience is equally useful – having a broad understanding of the human experience through literature is helpful. I have been writing (screenplays) more lately, so perhaps that is an affect of my late studies.”

With several writing projects currently in the works, Thompson says that she hopes to someday direct as well. “I definitely love the collaborative process of filmmaking and find myself thinking about all aspects- from art design to camera work, to costumes and makeup, to when I am on set, and feel it would be an incredibly challenging and a fulfilling opportunity to direct,” she shares.

As if her flawless resume couldn’t get any more impressive, this humble humanitarian actively participates in various charities around the world. Traveling to Haiti last year with her charity BuildOn, her team reached their fundraising goal, allowing them to open a school in Malawi this fall. “BuildOn focuses on education and community building, both here in the states through their inner-city programs for teens, and abroad through building schools in rural communities. It’s an awesome, empowering organization that encourages cultural exchange,” Thompson says. “BuildOn also requires equal enrollment of both boys and girls, which is vital in my opinion, and provides adult education which is beautiful to witness.”

When she isn’t dedicating her time to selflessly helping others, you may find this beautiful soul catching a break by the beach on her rollerblades blasting 90’s rap music or riding a horse off into the sunset. A lover of nature, yet city girl at heart, she stays active either swimming or with her certification in Pilates – while her passion for dance is still wildly active as she has big dreams of one day playing a burlesque dancer. Constantly channeling in on her true sources of inspiration, Thompson shares where she finds that deep inner drive. “A love for performance inspired me through dance, but when I realized I could bring words into the equation I knew I had met my creative purpose. I think the continual challenge to dive deeper into my understanding of humanity keeps me inspired, having to face my fears about going to deep places keeps me honest. There are parts of myself that I see in characters that I don’t like, and it’s so amazing to be able to admit that in myself and embrace that – in some ways exorcise certain demons, as well as embrace aspects that I love.”

Trusting herself, loving herself and believing in herself with an everyday motto of ‘I am enough’, has propelled Thompson into the limelight with a handful of new projects lined up for the next year. Having just wrapped Crown Vic, a film written and directed by Joel Souza, Thompson also recently finished filming Broken Ghost, directed by Richard Gray. You can also find her in the latest season of 12 Monkeys currently airing on SyFy. Keep up with Thompson on her Instagram @iamscottiet
