Zoë Renee: grown up in a very creative environment in Atlanta, she is now living every young actor’s dream in L.A. Full of optimism and positive energy, she keeps her fans and herself busy by playing Summer in Jinn, talk show appearances and vlogging her life on her self-titled YouTube channel. Figuring out the right balance between social media perfection and real-life happiness – she possibly struggles with the same things most millennials do. Still, she’s far from being average! Jute Magazine asked Zoë about her career, her life and her ways of handling stress.

First question; tell us something about yourself:

My name is Zoë Renee. I’m a 20-year-old actress from Atlanta. I grew up fascinated with music, but I also have a really short attention span. At this point I play 7 instruments moderatly well!

About your career: when did you know that you wanted to become an actress and when did you take first steps in the right direction?

My childhood home was like a revolving door filtering in all kinds of creatives. My dad is a musician as well, so the arts have always been a constant theme in my life! I tried tons of different creative avenues: juggling, karate, singing, Irish folk dance etc.! I finally took my first acting class and was HOOKED!

What has been the first moment in your acting career that you are still proud of?

When I booked The Quad I had NO idea that I’d be working with people that I had looked up to for so long! I had many scenes with Ruben Hudson Santiago #thelegend, he’s truly someone I wanted to just sit and study. We were in an interview one day and he said, “I’m proud of this young woman, can’t wait to see what she does!” That little sentence almost made me lose my mind!

As an actress, I imagine you’ve got a whole lot of competition. Could you tell us something about that? How does it make you feel and how do you deal with it?

In the beginning we’re told that this business is cutthroat; every woman for herself. What I wish I had learned earlier is that this business may not be the most kind, but it doesn’t mean I don’t need to be too. The reality is that there’s a lot of no’s and sometimes you’re in competition with girls you can’t even see. Keeping up with the idea that I’m in competition with every curly haired, brown skin girl weighed me down and completely demolished every hope of making new friends! Our business is competitive, but I have to remember to keep it healthy!

Getting and losing a role is sometimes so close together. When you go to a casting; what’s your mantra? Are you more of an optimist or a realist?

I’d like to think I’m more of an optimist! I know this industry is so unpredictable, but I often think, “well, why not me?”. My mantra is always, “what’s for me, is for me!”

Now you got your role in Jinn that recently premiered on SXSW. Could you tell us more about this one? What is it about and who are you playing?

Jinn is a coming of age story about a mother and daughter trying to find their way in the world! I play Summer who’s a carefree curly haired black girl, that’s now having to adjust to her mother’s new-found conversion to Islam. It’s a story of first love, sexuality, and family! I’m obsessed!

You’ve also been seen on Sister Circle TV. What was this experience like? When you are on TV does this make you more nervous than when shooting a movie?

I actually really just love talking to people; Sister Circle was my first talk show experience and I loved it! The talk show nerves were a little more magnified than when I’m filming a movie! There’s no script to stick to on a talk show.

You are also pretty active on social media. Do you feel like it’s a must have nowadays?

I do feel like social media is important! I struggle to find the balance of living and enjoying life while also letting my followers know that I’m living and enjoying life! It’s easy to make everything look perfect, I hope I remind my followers that my life is FAR from it and that it’s ok!

Do you feel like social media changed the game (if it comes to how actors can present themselves, but also social issue awareness)?

I do! Social media has given actors a voice outside of their movies or television shows. We’re now able to frequently comment on current events and create awareness for issues or causes that we care about.

Apart from acting, what is important to you?

Growing up I was surrounded by a pretty fantastic group of women. Women I could confide in, ask questions I thought were embarrassing, and just spend time with. Because that group was so integral to my growth as a woman I started a sister circle for girls in my community that want the same thing that I did!

What do you do in your free time and how do you cope with the stress that exists in your business?

I don’t like to stay still for too long! I love anything that keeps me moving and entertained! I started boxing a couple years ago and now I can’t stop! It’s my ultimate stress reliever!

Have you always known how to handle stress and pressure or did it take you a while to find the best way for you to do so?

I’m still learning; it’s so easy for me to get overwhelmed. In moments of major stress, I’m learning to put my self-care practices to use!

Last question: What would you like to tell our readers?

Find what makes your heart happy, ask for help when you need it and don’t be afraid to chase that crazy dream that nobody gets! You’re golden!
